Skulls of bears and big cats can be easily distinguished from each other in contrast to the rest of the skeleton. The author found out that in many Late Pleistocene collections the postcranial elements ascribed to bears or cats are often incorrectly determined. In this article the author lists the major differences between bears and cats. On the basis of the given determination characters and the illustrations these elements of bears and cats can be correctly determined. The elements described are humerus, ulna, radius, femur and tibia. For this study skeletons of brown bear ( Ursus arctos), cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), polar bear ( Thalarctos maritimus), cave lion (Panthera spelaea) and sabre-toothed cat (Homotherium latidens) have been used.
