Since 1999 Cranes have been summering in Fochteloerveen, a peat-moor relic in the northern Netherlands (Drenthe-Friesland). Breeding was first noticed in 2001 (1 pair), and from 2002 onwards two pairs have been present. From 2001 through 2004, respectively 1,1,3 and 1 chicks were raised. Besides breeding pairs, Fochteloerveen also held up to five summering nonbreeding birds in 2004. One of the pairs (after a failed breeding attempt) frequently chased the non-breeder flock.
