This summer the White-letter Hairstreak (Satyrium w-cdbum) was discovered in Brussels. In this article the distribution in Flanders of this endangered species is given. There have been 50 recorded observations of this butterfly in Flanders up till now. The White-letter Hairstreak is difficult to spot because of its concealed way of living, spending a large part of the time in the tree-tops of the elm, its foodplant. The butterfly's life cycle is described in brief. Populations, severely diminished after the outbreak of Dutch elm disease in the 1970's, could possibly recover after planting resistent elm trees.
