This is the first part of the bivalves in the well-known series about the shells of the Mediterranean. It follows the same principle as the other volumes. After a short introduction with some general information about the bivalves and their morphology the book gives a catalogue of the species, being an update of the previous catalogue by Sabelli, Giannuzzi-Savelli and Betulli. The main part of this book consists of very good colour photographs with the names of the figured shells. There are no shell descriptions, only the size and the location where the figured shell was collected. It is important that the book does not figure only one specimen of a species but a whole range of variability within the species, often specimens from different locations and biotopes, and some special characteristics in close-up. *
