Marine snails predate on eggs of sharks and skates by drilling holes in the egg-capsule and consuming the contents. This article discusses this phenomenon. After introductionairy chapters on the systematics of egg-laying sharks and skates and the different types of eggs, an overview is given of relevant literature published on this subject. The following predators are mentioned: Buccinum undatum, Burnupena papyracea, B. lagenaria, Cypraea spadicea and possibly Natica alderi, N. catena, N. montagui, N. pusilla and N. sordida. It is thought that other naticid and muricid gastropods also predate on eggs of sharks and skates.
