Last year the press drew attention to the havoc created by Helix aspersa snails in post boxes in south-western England. The snails in question nibbled the envelopes, in some cases destroying the address. Obviously this was a long-standing complaint. Postal authorities intimated that the mail boxes since had been provided with snail ‘excluders’ so that complaints had stopped.
