In July 2002 a giant squid was found on the coast near Hobart on Tasmania. It weighed about 250 kg and the length of the tentacles varied between 15 and 18 meters. The specimen was brought to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery for further inspection. The presence of unknown muscles on the tentacles makes it possible that this specimen belongs to a new species.
